Tesla's production volume and deliveries in the fourth quarter disappointed

Tesla has released its production and delivery numbers for the fourth quarter, and the numbers are disappointing compared to Wall Street analysts' expectations and management's estimates.

During the fourth quarter of 2022, Tesla produced over 439,000 vehicles and delivered over 405,000 of them. Wall Street estimated that about 420,000 vehicles would be delivered.

As a result, in 2022, vehicle shipments increased by 40% compared to 2021 to 1.31 million vehicles, while production increased by 47% to 1.37 million vehicles.

While the results were disappointing in comparison to Wall Street expectations, as well as Elon Musk's and Tesla's CFO Zach Kirkhorn's estimates, which were "a growth of just under 50%", the year-over-year increase is 40%, while the year-over-year production increase is 31%, and in a recession and with a sharp rise of inflation and interest rates, this is an excellent performance.

In comparison, Honda's sales dropped by 33% last year.

The company will release its fourth quarter and full year financial results after the markets close on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

There is no doubt that Tesla could have coordinated expectations with investors better in light of the drop in deliveries compared to expectations. There is no doubt that Musk's involvement in Twitter has caused and is causing Tesla damage on several levels. When trading starts on Tuesday, we will see how things affect the company's stock.

While Tesla is still growing by more than 50% on an annual average, the important question for us as investors is whether it can continue to grow at this high rate, assuming we are in an economic recession. Prices may have to be lowered and Tesla may introduce a cheaper model for developing markets such as China, India, and Brazil in the near future. Tesla is working in this direction without a doubt.
